GBS Records news

Hi, folks, our regular GBS Records website has been hacked. Oy vey.  So the website is down.  In the meantime, here’s our “News” section for 2020:  (oh, btw, because the site is down, none of the button links in the above graphic work. But links to other pages like our “Gear” page are above under the “About” tab beside the Home tab.)

GBS Records Autumn 2020 News…

Hello, folks, hope you are all staying safe and healthy.  We’ve been busy here at GBS, so busy we haven’t updated our news for a long while, but here’s what’s been happening:  We continue our collaboration with the marvelous TV series Songs At The Center, mixing the audio of the songs all the great artists perform for the television broadcast. (Syndication presently over 350 stations!)  We just finished the incredible Donna Mogavero’s new studio album, “End Of The Drive” and her songs and vocals are as glorious as ever. Trey Pearson is working on new music after the success of his recent release, “Love Is Love”, and alt rock gods Earwig are working on their new full-length with GBS.  Other recent releases include Irish music celtic heroes One For The Foxes brilliant CD “Take A Look Around” and it’s a gem, featuring the buttery vocals of Dave Curley, the stunning fiddle and vocals of Joanna Hyde, and keyboard and accordion talents of irishman Tadhg Ó Meachair (check out Tadhg’s other band, too, Ireland’s amazing Goiste). Plus, their Galway, Ireland singer Dave Curley continues his duo collaboration with multi-talented Finn Magill of Asheville, N Carolina, on their new record (we love great acoustic music here at GBS!)  We also quite enjoyed working on the great Shawn Colvin‘s vocal track on another Dave Curley collaboration as he teams up with the supremely talented Ashley Davis on her beautiful “When The Stars Went Out”. Also continuing projects at GBS are Go Robot Go, and band member Neal Havener’s own solo project, a massive collaboration guesting many local Columbus musicians. Jewish folk artist Joanie Calem also continues her multi-album projects here at GBS, and Mark Cantwil is putting the finishing touches on his Americana masterpiece while releasing teaser preview singles like “Pardon Me”.  Other albums underway, Bohemian Highway, and Steve Harper’s The Curbfeelers, and bluegrass maestro Gary Puckett’s next album is in progress.  And the astounding celtic wunderband The Drowsy Lads are chatting with GBS about their next venture.  We’re extremely grateful to continue making art in these times with these lovely and talented folks pushing love into this world. Health and love to you all, and stay safe!  Cheers!

We’re so darned busy that we’re somewhat terrible at keeping up with the social media media, (is that redundant?) but for those who care, here’s our FaceBook link.

Winter 2017 News:

Hi y’alls, here’s what’s been going on at GBS Records so far in 2017…  We just got back from Nashville where we worked with Al Perkins, legendary pedal steel guitar player who’s worked with, well, everybody;  he’s a sweet country gentleman and it was a pleasure hanging out with him.  We cut tracks at Tony Morra‘s “The Downtown Batterie Studios” (Tony’s an incredible drummer and just a super guy.)  Our client Jas Scarff from GuitarHouse Workshop had Al lay pedal steel on several of his superb songs.  Our pal Lizard McGee and his fantastic band Earwig just released their second single for their GBS produced release, Pause For The Jets, and the video for the single feature Columbus star Nina West.  Shot by the brilliant Stephen Webster of Worldwide Hideout Photography.

Autumn 2016 News:

Happy holiday season to you and yours!  Been a super busy year for us at GBS Records— yay!  Our most recent GBS release is full length CD by Jack Ballengee Morris which is a stunning debut by a died in the wool West Virginia roots/Americana songwriter, recently featured by Academy Award winning filmaker Barbara Kopple (Harlan County USA, Miss Sharon Jones!) in her recent film “Shelter” which also featured Jack’s father, WV folk legend David Morris. Jack’s record was nominated as an “album of the year” contender by RadioTroubadour Radio, and was mastered by our friend Brian Lucey at Magic Garden Mastering.  Also in the GBS Studios we have Al Smythe’s Free Beer n Chicken Coalition (recording with and produced by GBS’ own Eric French), and Steve Harper from The Curbfeelers.   This summer we put the finishing touches on the mastering for John Whelan’s celtic supergroup Gailfean who will be releasing the CD at the Dublin Irish Festival this year Aug 5, 6, 7th.  Also on Aug 5th banjo guru and folk musician extraordinaire Gary Puckett will be releasing his new CD “Grandfather Mountain” (a GBS produced pastoral /appalachian mountain music masterpiece) at The McConnell Arts Center and will be accompanied by local bluegrass flat-picking superstar Adam Schlenker, among others. Speaking of Adam, his own new bluegrass group “The Planet Riders,” a stunning collaboration with the incredibly talented Hayes Griffin, will be releasing their GBS recorded/mixed and mastered CD at Natalie’s CoalFired Pizza on Aug 14.  We’re also finalizing mixes for the amazing rock gods Earwig and their new release, “Pause For The Jets” which features lead singer Lizard McGee in a duet with Lydia Loveless for the video single “Wasted On You.  Lydia rocks.  Lizard rocks.  Together: RAWK! (well, sweet rawk!)

We’ve also been working with the amazing Maddie Bolzenius (with her vocal parter Phoebe!) of Black Moon & The Springtide for their upcoming full length release (also check out Maddie’s other band Admiral Contempt, recorded with GBS’s great friend Craig Markley of Ravenshack Studios— yay Craig!!)  Also putting together a beautiful folk album is local/international folk music artist Joanie Calem, who was a featured “Comfest Honored Artist” this year!

In film work, we were pleased to collaborate with local young filmmaker Jack Campise on his latest work, “All At Once”, which was also a collaboration with our good friend Lizard McGee and Earwig, also featuring the song “Wasted On You” shot at King Ave 5 and debuted at CCAD.  Filmmaker Neal Havener of Pretty Egg Productions is at GBS working on his latest film, due for a summer release, and of course we also continue our work with longtime client and fellow world traveller Robert Post on his great video series, “Posts From The Road” with video help from the amazing Ben Bays.

Also at the Dublin Irish Festival this year check out GBS clients, the sensational Slide and pick up a copy of their Mendicity release, which we had the honor of recording members Mick Broderick and David Curley, who also recorded their own superb album, Brand New Day here at GBS.  And of course The Drowsy Lads, local celtic greats, with their latest GBS recording, Pick It Up.  They are simply marvelous.

Also in the studio this summer, songwriter Jim Scarff is completing his album, featuring local greats Kay Harris of Sirens, drummer Matt Mees, and bassist Phil Maneri of 5th Ave Fret Shop (and of course Jim is a guitar instructor at the superb Guitar House Workshop, a shining example of a music community / artist’s workshop that we are so lucky to have in Cbus.)    Cheers, and happy holidays!

Hey, folks, here comes spring! YAY!

Goings on this month at GBS, we’re working with Robert Post on his new web series launch, “Posts From The Road,” an amazing and unique take on what it’s like traveling the world as a performer of a one-man-show, with all the wondrous, odd and entertaining people and places this planet has to offer.  Please check it out at http://robertpost.org

Speaking of video, we’re also finishing up a music video that’s a fantastic collaboration between the band Earwig and Bloodshot Records touring artist Lyida Loveless.  Dark, gorgeous, moody and romantic pop, soon to be released, entitled “Wasted On You.”  Lydia is presently touring europe and the US, so look for her, and Earwig is finishing their new record, with a show at Ace Of Cups coming up on May 1st.

Also in the studio is EverydaySunday with their new project, Populis.  Look for an EP out in May.  We’re also presently tracking projects with ToeRing (ToeRing’s own Maddie Bolzenius is fresh off her leading role in Gallery Players production of Les Miz, for which she garnered stellar reviews; congrats, Maddie!), Gary Puckett (with special guest Adam Schlenker), The Dream Thieves, John Bolzenius of Guitar House Workshop, west coast vocalist Alexis Ryon-Melcher, celtic trio extraodinaire Sona, guitar whiz Jim Scarff with special guests Phil Maneri and Matt Mees, roots artist Jack Ballengee-Morris (check out his appearance on Mountain Stage here) with producer Patrick Testa, fingerstyle guitar guru Terry Rice with A Little Fiddle’s incredible Krista Solars on fiddle/violin, promotional music for filmmaker/actor and now author Dyrk Ashton for his upcoming novel, and, whew! lots more!  Stay tuned for updates, and happy spring, yalls!
