Howdee folks. Happy February 2012 to alls yalls. Here’s what’s shaking at GBS this month: We’ve been very excited to have one of Ohio’s premiere bands, The Phantods, in cutting new tracks for their upcoming trip to SouthBySouthWest (SXSW), one of the music industry’s finest talent showcases, held every March in lovely Austin, Texas. This week-long event showcases national and international musicians, artists, films, and interactive technology, and perhaps is the most esteemed event of this type in the world. Congratulations to The Phantods, an amazing band, not to be missed, for their drive and talent. We are proud to be a part of their journey. “Rock history”, as we like to say here at GBS, was made here, we suspect, with this fantastic group, and we’re pleased as punch. Good luck, guys. (and gal.) Check out their YouTube video of their time here at GBS. And while you’re at it, hit their Facebook page as well and say hi.

Also in the works here at GBS this month, Jason Quicksall recorded his superb original “Alligator Song” for submission to Kerrville New Folk and other songwriting contests (good luck, brother! That song kills!) Another amazing songwriter and singer, Austin Craig, cut tracks for his new album, and in from Chicago was singer/songwriter Kristen Kelly, who can sing like nobody’s bidness. Sho nuff the girl rocks.

Other projects in the works, in the Celtic realm; the Irish band, Slide, who are just tremendous musicians, working on their new record. And another act from Ireland, the Donal Lunny produced Goitse, sent tracks to us here at GBS for a vocal duet with Slide’s David Curley, whose irish tenor vocals are like butter; sweet, silky irish butter. The Hedge Family, children of Scottish transplant Mark Hedge, moved their CD through our mastering process; also mastering projects from celtic act Randy Clepper, as well as Changeling, mastering their “Live In England” release recorded live in Bristol, UK.

Earwig’s new EP is under way, and no bones about it, the band rocks. Lizard and the boys are magicians. Also through the studio this new year were Robert Post, Jack Morris, Go Robot Go, The Fiction Writers, Mark Cantwil, and the easter bunny. Oh, wait, that’s next month.

talk to yalls then!

Hello, all you wonderful folks. We here at GBS want to wish you a superb holiday season this year. Hope you’re enjoying it as much as we are. We’re excited about several things this season, not the least of which is how well our friend and our own Eric French’s bandmate, Josh Krajcik is doing on Fox‘s singing competition show The X-Factor. Top 3 so far, and that’s pretty darned exciting! Good luck, Josh! We’re pulling for you!

Other fun news here at GBS; we had the privilege and honor to work with another great singer, Gretchen King from The Phantods, in collaboration with our old friend Jerome Dillon (who Tom recorded and toured with when Jerome played drums for Howlin’ Maggie) on the soundtrack Jerome is composing for a major film in Los Angeles. Gretchen tracked the vocals to two amazing songs for the film. She’s a sweet person and an incredibly talented artist. Next X-Factor star? Who knows?!

Other projects at the studio recently; Austin Craig winding up tracking for his album, mixes for the lads from Slide for their project, Go, Robot, Go!, our old friend Robert Post (who’s helping again this year with BalletMet’s The Nutcracker) and speaking of BalletMet, we’re proud to say that their performance of Carmen received glowing reviews. Our extremely talented singer/songwriter friend Jason Quicksall has been cutting tracks to his killer “Alligator” song here at GBS, and we’re continuing to work with singer/songwriter’s Jack Morris, as well as other great acts. Speaking of, Trey Pearson from Everyday Sunday was in recently cutting vocals for their new record, and we had the pleasure of mastering Mark Cantwil’s latest effort. It’s a good life at GBS and we’re happy to be here. And we hope you are happy to be alive and hope you’re enjoying this holiday season.

To hear a few GBS holiday songs, go to our MySpace page and get some audio cheer! Just click here.

The concert, featuring Howlin’ Maggie, Watershed, The Toll, Willie Phoenix, Earwig, and Andy’s good friend Quinn Fallon And The X-Rated Cowboys, was filmed under the direction of filmmaker Mike McGraner and the team at Kinopicz, where the project was completed. GBS Records was privileged to have recorded the audio at the event and mix the 24 channel multi-track performances for this film, which will be available for purchase on DVD. All proceeds go to the Andymanathon Charities.

Please come out and support the memory of this amazing man and philanthropist, and see six superb bands rock the screen in tribute to Andy’s life and passion for music. We would certainly love to see alls yalls shining faces there.

peace and love,

Howdy, folks! Hope you’re enjoying this beautiful autumn. We know we are. We’ve brought in October with some incredible celtic music with a block-booked week of recording with lads from the amazing celtic band Slide, one of Ireland’s best celtic groups, ever! We’ve got some killer (or as the lads would say, “deadly”) tracks laid down, and it was a true pleasure to work with musicians of this caliber. Plus we learned some good Irish expressions. No, we will not tell you what they are. Yet. Suffice to say it was a studio full of colorful Irish brogue and beautiful instruments and performances. Yay!

Also this month, in from Chicago, Kris Kelly, playing guitar and singing with her gorgeous voice; the new season of performance music for BalletMet (we recommend everyone catching BalletMet’s performance of Carmen in October– it promises to be, of course, truly beautiful) and of course our many other client projects. More on those in a bit.

In memory of our friend and former CD101 deejay, Andy “Andyman” Davis, we’ve just completed the mixes for the memorial concert at The LC last fall featuring Howlin’ Maggie, Watershed, Earwig, Willie Phoenix, and The Toll. This show will be released on DVD this November to benefit the Andymanathon Charities with a premiere at Studio 35. We’ll keep y’alls posted on that and on all the projects going on here at GBS.

Now get out and enjoy some fall color! Peace, y’alls!

Tom starts at 6PM. C’mon out and start your Labor Day weekend right! Hope to see you there,

Howdy, folks! Looking for some fun? Check out our celtic clients playing at The Dublin Irish Festival, Aug 5th thru the 7th, in lovely Dublin, Ohio. We finished our second album with The Drowsy Lads this year, and they’ll be playing at the festival, along with other major talents in the celtic scene, our clients the General Guinness band, celtic rockers Knot Fibb’n, the Yankee Celtic Consort, and celtic flutist extraordinaire Beth Hicks (who is playing with her 2 bands, the aforementioned Knot Fibb’n and 9 Castle Close). Beth’s CD, It’s Simple, is the latest celtic project we had the privilege to be involved in.

Other friends and clients performing include our buddy John Whelan with his superb Cape May Ceili Band (John may well be the world’s finest celtic accordionist), celtic guitarist supreme John Doyle (who’s performing with Karen Casey and Buille), fingerstyle guitarist John Sherman (I know, a whole lot of Johns here), Eddie Cotter and Morton O’Kelly, Jim Keenan, Charlene Adzima, and our great friend Craig Markley with his exceptional group, Lone Raven.

Plus a tremendous line-up of amazing international artists. This fest is one of the yearly highlights of Central Ohio, so please stop on out and enjoy this wonderful event. See you there! Slainte!

Howdy, folks! Y’alls staying cool? We hope so! We wanted to let you know that this Thursday, July 28th, Oswald And The Herringbones will be doing a show at Espresso Yourself Music Cafe in lovely Powell, Ohio. This show will feature music from the first CD, “This Is Not A Christmas Album,” with Michael Barone and Steve Sims, and it’s Michael’s birthday, so it promises to be a fun night. And Espresso Yourself is a coffee-house and bakery, not a bar, so it’s kid friendly–yup, it’s an all-ages show, so come on out and bring the family!

The show starts early, at 7PM, with Neal and Mike doing an opening set of sweet duo songs. A must see.

Hope you see you there!
