STAFF
Tom Boyer
Owner/Engineer
Prior to his present gig as engineer/producer, Tom spent some years touring with his former band Oswald & The Herringbones, performing at clubs and colleges throughout the U.S as a member of NACA. He also had the privilege to both record and then tour manage and engineer live sound for Howlin’ Maggie as they toured to support their Columbia/Sony release, “Honeysuckle Strange,” during which he was employed by Sony. He still performs solo and with the occasional client.
Eric worked as a member of Capital University’s sound and light crew for 3 years before being brought on board GBS/OATH Studios in the fall of 2002. He currently plays in the bands Hawkline and The Josh Krajcik Band and is employed full time as both a recordist for WOSU-Classical 101 FM, where he records live classical music concerts for broadcast, as well as being a radio operations engineer at WOSU, the public radio and TV station operated by The Ohio State University. Eric hosts his own show called Groundswell Columbus on WOSU Radio’s digital and online station, Capital City Radio. Eric’s former bands were Caspian, f**bomb and Montarosa.
Tom’s Comment About Eric:
“When I first met Eric he was living by the side of the road in milk carton, and subsisting entirely on Spam. Liquid Spam, the kind they sell in a juicebox. He wanted so desperately to be a recording engineer that I cried as I laughed and pointed, ridiculing him. A juicebox upside the head set me straight, and after he threatened to drop a case of juiceboxes on me from an overpass, I relented. He’s been working here ever since. Eric has wondrous talents that never seem to amaze me. He speaks many languages, American Sign Language Nosepicking Finger Waggling among them. He really gets that pinky finger going when he’s digging for gold.”
Eric’s Comment About Tom:
“I waggle my finger at you, Boyer.”
THE STUDIO
GBS Records has the feel of a project studio, designed as an artists workshop, with a very relaxed, comfortable environment. Hopefully, this allows the artist to concentrate on the project without worrying unduly about the clock. Located in the very heart of downtown Columbus, the studio is only 2 blocks from the state capital and directly across from the City Center Mall, which allows for some welcome dining and distraction for clients in the “hurry up and wait” world of recording. (“It’ll only take me ten minutes to do my guitar lead, guys, really.” Yeah, right.) The studio was originally built at the same time and in cooperation with The Recording Workshop by the same folks and has the same look and vibe. In existence for over 20 years in the Trautman Building, it feels like recording in your own home, but with shaggy brown carpet.
A BIT OF HISTORY
The studio was originally designed as a personal project studio for myself, myself being Tom Boyer, and my band, Oswald & The Herringbones. I am an engineer as well as an artist, and the studio became quickly popular with other local and even national artists as an economical and friendly environment in which to work. It grew in popularity and now has provided work on projects for larger record labels, including Columbia, Shanakie, Slab/Concrete, Sony, Green Linnet, Elektra, Flicker (blah, blah, yeah, yeah, aren’t we Precious? Nasty Hobbits’s!)
For several years we had a second location in the historic Buggyworks Building at 440 Nationwide Blvd, in conjunction with Cool Breeze Systems which was a very gratifying collaboration. However, Cool Breeze Systems has moved to Boston and The Buggyworks is being converted to loft style condos. We miss it. Precious.

OUR PHILOSOPHY
Our goal here at GBS Records is honor your artistic vision. We make our own records, so we understand how you feel about your music. We want to treat you how we would want to be treated. We want to serve you as we would wish to be served. The decision to create, to make art, is worth respecting. And admirable.
SOME SUCCESS STORIES
EverydaySunday recorded an independent album at OATH that charted nationally on CMR radio, and the band was quickly courted by labels, soon signing with Flicker Records. After making their first Flicker release in Nashville, the band, in a beautiful expression of loyalty, asked their label and producer Quinlan permission to record their second album, “Anthems For The Imperfect,” back here in Columbus with us. We are both grateful and inspired, and indeed touched by their loyalty and integrity. Such heart can often be rare in this business. Thanks, guys.
All one can do in any business is try to do right by your friends and clients, and hope that your effort prompts such loyalty for your work. We’re very touched by many of our clients who have returned again and again, such as Knot Fibbin’, General Guinness, Throat Culture, The Fabulous Johnson Bros, John Morgan, Fred Haring, EverydaySunday, and more. You know who you are. Thanks.

Howlin’ Maggie recorded demos at OATH that not only helped get them get their record deal with Sony/Columbia, but also actually ended up on that national release, including “Alcohol,” their first single released to radio, as well as “I’m A Slut,” the second radio release. Both singles had notable MTV videos. Columbia felt that several of those demos warranted being on the national release. We at OATH were gratefully pleased to be a part of their project. And grateful and honored by Harold “Happy” Chichester’s loyaty in both future recordings and as a member of their touring entourage.

Robert Post is a Columbus-based performer actor who tours his one man show throughout the country. The New York Times lauded Robert’s show “The Postman Delivers” during it’s run on Broadway at the New Victory Theater on 42nd Street. And fine Mr. Post garners rave review wherever he performs, from the Wexner Center or CATCO, to Broadway and beyond. Robert creates the soundscapes for his pieces here at OATH. It’s an extremely fun and gratifying collaboration.

The Haynes Boys, after recording a demo at OATH, landed a deal with Curb Records. Singer Tim Easton remarked “it was those great demos you made us.” We appreciate that, Tim.
